Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag and the Rest of the Family
Whirlpool Corporation also owns KitchenAid, Maytag, JennAir and Amana, so a Maytag washer and a Whirlpool washer can share parts and some codes. The warranties don't match, though. Maytag advertises a 10-year limited parts warranty on major kitchen and laundry appliances made after 2017, which the Maytag repair page covers. When you call, give the brand on the badge plus the full model number, and ask whether the repair company works on that brand.
Five Whirlpool Codes Worth Clearing Before a Visit
Whirlpool's own help pages give a first check for each of these. Try it once; the door lock, lid and other washer codes live in the error code library.

Whirlpool Warranty Terms by Appliance

- General rule
- Typically one year from the date of delivery, covering factory specified replacement parts and the repair labor for defects in materials or workmanship.
- Refrigerators
- Parts for one year after delivery. On some models, sealed refrigeration parts are covered from the second through the fifth year after purchase.
- Refrigerator water filters
- 30 days from delivery.
- Washers and dryers
- Parts for one year from delivery.
- Dishwashers
- One year after delivery, and filters carry a one-year limited warranty starting in the second year.
- Ranges, ovens, cooktops, microwaves
- Most are covered for a year after delivery, parts and the associated labor.
- Condition on all of it
- The appliance has to have been installed and operated as the instructions and owner's manual specify.
Where Whirlpool's Warranty Stops
Whirlpool lists these exclusions on the same page. Two of them matter for renters and remodelers in particular:
- Appliances in commercial, non-residential or multiple-family settings. If you rent in a multi-family building, ask the landlord who handles appliance repairs.
- Removing built-in fixtures that block access to the appliance, such as trim or cabinetry around a built-in fridge.
- Damage from improper installation, or installation that breaks electrical or plumbing codes.
- Converting a gas appliance, for example from natural gas to propane.
- Damage from non-Whirlpool parts or unauthorized modifications.
- Accidents, misuse or natural disasters, plus rust or discoloration from corrosive environments.
How Whirlpool Warranty Service Gets Booked
Whirlpool asks you to try its Product Help pages and the Problem Solver section of the Use and Care Guide before filing a claim. If you still need a technician, have proof of purchase showing the retailer's name and address, the model and serial number, and a short description of the problem.
On many Whirlpool refrigerators the model and serial sticker is on the ceiling of the fresh-food section, front and center; others put it on the back panel. Washers carry it on the back or around the door frame. Take a photo before you call anyone.
Warranty repairs are scheduled through W Service, which Whirlpool describes as its network of local, Whirlpool-trained technicians, with online booking around the clock. Whirlpool points out that a refrigerator compressor can cost upwards of $800 to repair without a plan; the LG compressor warranty math shows how that bill splits between part and labor.
Garage-Ready Whirlpool Refrigerators and Houston Summers
Whirlpool sells some refrigerators as garage-ready and explains the settings on its product help page. The factory Recommended setting is rated for surrounding temperatures of 55°F to 110°F. Garage Mode is meant for a space that stays between 38°F and 55°F, so it's a cold-weather setting.
What about a regular Whirlpool kitchen model moved out to the garage? Whirlpool cautions that one not designed for hot surroundings can end up running for long stretches, which raises the power bill and wears on its parts. Houston has plenty of hot days: Bush Intercontinental averages roughly 111 days of 90°F or hotter in NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals, and the airport has hit 109°F.
So check the model before paying for parts. A standard model that struggles in a hot garage may just be in the wrong place. A garage-ready model that can't hold 40°F on the Recommended setting, in a space under 110°F, likely has a genuine fault. Out of Warranty: Is the Whirlpool Worth Fixing?
Most Whirlpool coverage ends at one year, so almost every Whirlpool repair after that is on you. The math is the usual one. Consumer Reports caps a sensible repair at 50 percent of what the new product would cost, and HomeGuide adds that appliances over 10 years old typically aren't worth repairing.
Laundry parts tend to land on the right side of that line. HomeGuide's national ranges put a washer drain pump at $150 to $350 installed and a lid switch or door lock at $100 to $300, while a dryer that blows its thermal fuse runs $75 to $150, a repair HomeGuide links to blocked vents. Dishwasher Filters and Fill Screens: Two Cheap Whirlpool Checks
Dishwashers carry one Whirlpool quirk. The machine itself is covered for a year, but the filter gets its own one-year limited warranty that starts in the second year. A Whirlpool dishwasher that stops cleaning well at 18 months, with a damaged filter, may still have a covered part even though the rest of the warranty has lapsed.
A washer fill code can also be a maintenance job. Houston's main water system averaged 135.5 mg/L total hardness in the city's 2025 water quality report, and over time mineral grit and sediment can build up on the small screens where the fill hoses meet the washer, which slows filling until the machine throws F8 E1 or LF. Shut the valves, unscrew the hoses and rinse the screens before you book anyone.
Whirlpool Questions From Houston Kitchens and Laundry Rooms
Does the Whirlpool warranty start when I buy it or when it arrives?
Whirlpool's overview dates most coverage from the date of delivery, though it describes the refrigerator sealed-system years as running from purchase. If your appliance sat on back order for weeks, keep both the receipt and the delivery ticket so the dates can be checked.
Should I switch my Whirlpool to Garage Mode in August?
No. Whirlpool designed Garage Mode for garages that stay between 38°F and 55°F. For a hot Houston summer, the factory Recommended setting is the one rated up to 110°F. If the fridge still won't hold temperature on that setting, a part is the likely cause.
Is a KitchenAid or Amana repaired the same way as a Whirlpool?
They're all Whirlpool Corporation brands, so parts and diagnostics often overlap, but the model decides. Give the technician the full model number from the label. Read the brand's own warranty card before assuming Whirlpool terms apply.
My dryer shows Check Vent but the vent was cleaned last year. What now?
Whirlpool's guide also blames crushed or kinked ducts and runs with too many turns. Check the flexible piece behind the dryer first. If the message persists, Whirlpool suggests a venting specialist clean the whole run. A clear vent with a repeating message is then a dryer repair question.
Is a Whirlpool extended service plan worth buying?
Whirlpool's plans are service contracts issued by Domestic & General, which Whirlpool's service site says are not insurance. They begin after the factory warranty ends. Whirlpool advertises plans starting at $34.95. Weigh that against HomeGuide's national $100 to $400 range for a typical appliance repair and the age of the machine before you sign up.
