Dishwasher Not Draining? Find Where the Water Is Stuck
A little water in the sump under the filter is normal on many machines. Maytag's rule of thumb is that an inch or more left in the tub points to a clog. The useful question is where the water stopped. Food, seeds and soggy label paper caught in the filter hold it inside the machine. A kinked hose, a packed disposer or a blocked air gap hold it on the way out, and a pump that has quit can't push it anywhere.
Listen during the drain part of a cycle, or press Cancel or Drain if your control panel has it. A steady hum with no water moving often means something hard, such as a shard of glass or a cherry pit, is wedged against the pump impeller. Silence where the pump should be running points toward the pump motor, its wiring or the control board. If dirty water gurgles up into the sink instead, the blockage is probably downstream, in the disposer or the drain line under the counter.
New installs have their own trap. Garbage disposers usually come with a plastic knockout plug sealing the dishwasher inlet, and Frigidaire lists an unremoved plug first among its checks for the i20 "did not drain" code. Frigidaire also wants the drain hose raised to at least 32 inches, which helps keep sink water from siphoning back into the tub. If the dishwasher behaved until a new disposer, faucet or sink went in, look there first.

Drain Checks That Take About Ten Minutes
Switch off the dishwasher's breaker or unplug it, then lay towels along the front. A plastic cup and a sponge will clear most of the standing water so you can reach the filter.
- Pull the bottom rack, twist the filter assembly out and rinse it under the faucet with a soft brush. Look for glass, seeds, bones and label paper in the mesh.
- Shine a flashlight into the sump below the filter for anything hard enough to jam the pump.
- Trace the drain hose from the back of the machine to the sink. It should climb in a loop (Frigidaire's minimum is 32 inches) and shouldn't be crushed where the dishwasher was pushed back into its opening.
- If a small chrome cylinder sits next to the faucet, that's the air gap. Pull the cap and clear out any gunk.
- Run the disposal with cold water, then start a short rinse or drain cycle and watch whether the tub empties.
- Photograph any code or blinking-light pattern before resetting anything, and note the model number from the sticker on the side edge of the door.
Leaks, Wet Loads and Other Dishwasher Faults
Draining is only one way a dishwasher fails. These are the other patterns worth describing when you call, with the parts usually behind each.
- Puddle at the front corner of the door
- A door gasket that's torn or flattened, suds from hand dish soap that foam over the seal, or a spray arm with a cracked hub throwing water straight at the door. A machine that sits out of level can also send water toward the front. Dry the floor, run a short cycle and watch. - Water spreading from underneath the machine
- Usually a connection or part behind the lower panel: the water inlet valve, the supply line fitting, the drain hose clamp or a pump seal. Samsung dishwashers show LC or LE when a sensor in the base detects moisture. Close the supply valve under the sink until the repair. A slow leak underneath can soak the subfloor and cabinet base long before it shows.
- Cycle runs for hours, and the load still comes out wet
- If the incoming water is cool, the machine pauses to heat it, and Whirlpool notes that stretches the cycle. A failed heating element or high-limit thermostat gives the opposite picture: a normal run time and a cold, wet load. Many newer models dry by condensation with help from rinse aid, so damp plastics on those are expected.
- Won't start, or stops partway with the lights on
- A door latch or switch that doesn't register as closed, a child lock left on, or a control board fault. Samsung files 4C and 4E under water supply problems, which sends you back to the supply valve and hose under the sink. Close the door firmly until the latch clicks, then check the manual for your child-lock button combination.
Hot Water, Houston Hard Water and a Cleaner Wash
Whirlpool's guidance is that water should be 120°F as it enters the dishwasher, and it suggests running the hot tap at the nearest sink until it's hot before starting. In a house where the kitchen sits at the far end from the water heater, the first fill can otherwise arrive lukewarm. Cooler water means longer heating pauses and, by Whirlpool's account, a load that may not wash as well.
Then there's the mineral content. The City of Houston's 2025 Water Quality Report lists average hardness on the Main System at 135.5 mg/L as calcium carbonate, about 7.9 grains per gallon, with a high reading of 229 mg/L. Minerals at that level can dry as white film on glassware and slowly narrow the small jets in the spray arms, so the top rack may get a weaker wash while the machine sounds perfectly normal. Scale can also coat the inlet valve screen and slow the fill.
A quick test separates scale from damage: wipe a cloudy glass with white vinegar. Film that comes off is mineral deposit, and rinse aid plus an occasional cleaning cycle usually handles it. Cloudiness that stays is likely etching, which no repair will reverse. Samsung's 3E code runs the other way, meaning the supply is too hot; Samsung asks for water below 176°F, so check the water heater setting before assuming a sensor failed.

Consumer Reports says its dishwasher data typically leans toward replacement, because the machines lose value fast and professional repairs can be surprisingly expensive. Home builders' figures agree: the NAHB study of home component lifespans (2007, using 2005 data) gives dishwashers roughly 9 years, near the bottom of its kitchen list.
