Start With the Receipt: How LG Dates Your Warranty
Say you bought an LG refrigerator two years ago and can't find the receipt. LG's refrigerator warranty requires proof of original retail purchase showing the model and date. Without it, LG starts the warranty clock 90 days after the manufacture date, which can be months before anyone plugged the fridge in.
The washer terms are stricter about who owns the coverage. LG's washer warranty applies only to the original retail purchaser, isn't transferable to a later owner, and requires the machine to have been bought through an LG authorized dealer. The refrigerator warranty is also limited to the original purchaser. So a used LG, or one that came with a rental, is usually a straightforward local repair. A refrigerator that came with a house you bought is outside LG's warranty for the same reason.
Both documents exclude damage or missing items on display, open-box and discounted units, and the refrigerator terms exclude refurbished and "as is" units entirely. Check the sales slip on a floor model.

What LG's Fine Print Leaves Out
A covered part can still be refused if the failure falls into an excluded cause. Each line below is taken from one or both LG warranty documents:
- Failures during power outages or from interrupted or inadequate electrical service, and damage from incorrect voltage. If an LG quit right after a hurricane-season outage or a brownout, read that clause before filing.
- Damage from lightning, wind, floods or other acts of nature.
- Problems caused by leaky or frozen water pipes, restricted drain lines or an inadequate water supply.
- Damage from water filters, parts or cleaning products LG has not authorized.
- Removing and reinstalling a unit built into an inaccessible spot, such as tight cabinetry.
- Cosmetic damage on a washer not reported to LG within 7 calendar days of delivery (one week on refrigerators).
- Commercial, rental or office use, and units whose serial number is missing or altered.
- Service trips to correct house wiring or plumbing, reset a breaker, or fix an earlier unauthorized repair.
How LG Books Warranty Repairs and Flat-Rate Visits
LG takes repair requests through its schedule a repair page. You choose the product and symptom, enter contact details, then review available service dates with an LG representative and track the request online. Owners with an LG Premium Care plan go through a separate phone line listed on that page.
Out of warranty, LG also offers flat-rate repairs booked from the same page, which LG says are guaranteed and use genuine LG parts. That flat rate is a useful benchmark. If you'd rather have a local company look at it, ask two things on the phone: do they work on LG, and do they fit LG parts.
Two practical notes from LG's washer terms: the machine has to be unobstructed and reachable, and if the repair can't be finished in the home, LG may remove the unit, repair it and bring it back. LG Codes That Look Worse Than They Are
Five LG displays you can often act on yourself. One honest try is enough; a code that survives it goes on the repair list. LG's sensor, fan and board codes, plus the rest of the washer list, are in the error code library.

LG Linear Compressors: Doing the Math After Year Five
Many LG refrigerators use a linear or inverter compressor (the spec sheet names it), and that is the only compressor type LG's 10-year parts clause covers. Picture a French door model in year seven that runs constantly and never gets below 45°F. If the technician confirms the compressor, LG should supply the part, but labor, refrigerant and the sealed-system work around it are billed to you.
That labor is not small. HomeGuide's national range for a compressor replacement is $700 to $1,250 installed, with the part alone at $200 to $400, so a covered part still leaves a bill in the hundreds. Compare it with half the price of the refrigerator you would buy instead, which is the rule the repair or replace guide works through.
HomeGuide notes that sealed-system work must be done by an EPA-certified technician trained to handle refrigerants, so ask about that before approving a compressor swap. Texas Occupations Code §1302.058 exempts residential refrigerators and freezers from the state A/C and refrigeration contractor license, but it doesn't touch the federal refrigerant rules.
Placement matters before anyone condemns the compressor. LG's help library says its refrigerators operate best between 55°F and 110°F, so a model parked in a Houston garage should be checked against that band first. LG Warranty Questions, Answered
Does LG cover a compressor that fails in year eight?
Partly. LG's refrigerator warranty covers a linear or inverter compressor as a part through year 10, but labor is only included in years 1 to 5. In year eight you'd pay for the technician's time and the sealed-system work while LG supplies the compressor. Keep your receipt handy, because LG needs proof of the purchase date.
Can I use a non-LG water filter without losing coverage?
LG's refrigerator warranty excludes damage caused by accessories LG hasn't authorized, and it names water filters as an example. The wording is about damage the filter causes, so if a leak or valve failure traces back to a third-party filter, LG can decline that repair. Filters themselves are consumables and aren't covered either way.
My LG washer drum has a crack. Is it covered for life?
The stainless steel drum carries a lifetime parts-only term on LG washers, but only for the original purchaser who bought from an authorized dealer. You'd still pay labor, and replacing a drum means taking much of the machine apart. Get the labor quote first, then weigh it against the washer's age.
Is LG flat-rate repair cheaper than a local company?
It depends on the job. LG books flat-rate out-of-warranty repairs through its scheduling page, and a local company quotes its own price after a diagnosis. Ask each for the total, including the trip or diagnosis fee, and compare. Both routes are open once the warranty has ended.
Does LE mean the same thing on an LG washer as on a Samsung?
No. On an LG front-loader, LE means the motor strained and the tub failed to turn, usually from an overload or a coin or wire in the drum. Samsung uses LE and LC for a water level or leakage error, so a Samsung owner checks for a leak or kinked hose instead. Read the brand on the badge before you search the code.
