What a Healthy Refrigerator Ice Maker Needs
Most ice makers stop for a reason you can measure. These are the manufacturers' own numbers, so you can compare them with what your refrigerator is doing before anyone comes out.
- Normal output
- About 4 pounds a day from a standard crescent-cube ice maker, 7 cubes every 70 to 80 minutes, per GE Appliances. A full bucket holds about 8 pounds.
- Freezer setting
- 0°F is the usual recommendation. KitchenAid gives 0°F to 5°F as the range for good ice production.
- Mold temperature
- GE says the ice maker has to reach 16°F before a harvest cycle will start, so a warm freezer slows or stops production.
- Too cold
- Whirlpool warns that a freezer below -10°F can freeze cubes on the outside first and eject them hollow.
- Water pressure
- Whirlpool says the water inlet valve needs at least 20 psi to fill the mold properly.

Refrigerator Ice Maker Not Working: Symptoms and Causes
- No ice, but the water dispenser still pours
- Water reaches the door but not the mold, so look at the ice maker's own path: the on switch or bail arm, a frozen fill tube, a mold stuck with a cube under the ejector rake, or the ice maker module itself. On many side-by-side and French door models the dispenser and ice maker share one inlet valve with separate solenoids, so one side can fail alone. GE warns the mold can be hot during a harvest cycle; let it sit before you try to free a stuck cube.
- No ice and weak water from the dispenser
- Now the shared supply is the suspect: an old or badly seated filter, a kinked line behind the refrigerator, a partly closed supply valve, or pressure below Whirlpool's 20 psi floor. A reverse osmosis system under the sink can cut pressure to the refrigerator, so mention one if you have it.
- Small, hollow or crescent cubes with thin walls
- The mold is short-filling or the freezer is too cold. Low pressure and a clogged filter shrink the fill; Whirlpool warns that a setting below -10°F can make the ice maker harvest cubes before the centers freeze. A refrigerator that sits out of level can also spill water unevenly across the mold.
- Buzzing from the back of the refrigerator
- KitchenAid notes that an ice maker left switched on without a connected water supply can buzz, which is the inlet valve calling for water that never comes. It can show up after a move or a kitchen remodel, when the line was capped but the ice maker wasn't turned off.
- Ice fused into a block, or the dispenser grinds and delivers nothing
- Cubes that partly melt and refreeze weld together, jamming the auger. Whirlpool also points out that an ice maker that doesn't get much use can freeze the auger motor. On Samsung French doors with an in-door ice room, a 40E code flags the fan that keeps that compartment cold. Pull the bucket, break the block apart in the sink, and check the chute for ice before you call.
- Ice that tastes or smells off
- Whirlpool names a worn-out filter as a common cause, followed by poorly wrapped food near the ice bin; ice absorbs odors in the freezer. Throw out the old ice, change the filter, and wrap anything strong-smelling.
Houston Water, Filters and the Inlet Valve
Every cube starts at a small solenoid valve on the back of the refrigerator. That valve opens for a few seconds, pushes water through a tube into the freezer, and depends on steady pressure and a clean path to fill the mold. It's also the part that takes the brunt of whatever is in the water.
Houston's main system delivered water averaging 135.5 mg/L of total hardness in 2025, peaking at 229 mg/L, according to the city's 2025 water quality report. Those minerals are what a refrigerator filter and the valve's inlet screen end up holding. Missouri City homes get water from the city or from one of its municipal utility districts, and each publishes its own water quality report, so check that report rather than Houston's.
Sediment matters as much as hardness. GE notes that new construction in an area can send more sediment into the water system, a reason to change the filter before six months are up. If a new filter briefly fixes production and then it fades again within weeks, tell the technician; a partly blocked valve screen or a supply line full of debris can keep defeating new filters.
One more trap after a filter change: a filter that isn't fully locked can cut flow to both the dispenser and the ice maker. KitchenAid's quick test is to remove the filter and try the dispenser. If water flows without it, the filter was installed wrong and needs reseating.
Checks and Resets Before You Book a Technician
Each of these is free, and each rules out a cause that doesn't need a part.
- Confirm the ice maker is on. Raise and lower the bail arm or check the switch or panel setting, since a bumped control stops production quietly.
- Read the freezer with an appliance thermometer. Anything warmer than about 5°F suggests a refrigerator cooling problem rather than the ice maker.
- Replace a filter older than six months, or reseat the current one until it clicks.
- Open the supply valve fully and straighten the line behind the refrigerator when you slide it back.
- Look inside the freezer at the fill tube where it enters the ice maker. A plug of ice there means water has been dripping and freezing.
- Try the reset. KitchenAid suggests holding the ice maker's reset button for a few seconds, or unplugging the refrigerator for one minute if it has none. On a Samsung showing a code, photograph the code first; Samsung asks owners not to clear most codes unless its guide says to.
- After any change, give it time. Whirlpool says to allow 24 hours for temperatures to settle, and the first harvest can take several hours on top of that.

Fix the Ice Maker, Replace It, or Live Without It?
A $250 to $600 ice maker replacement is easy to justify in a five-year-old refrigerator and harder in one near the 13 years that NAHB's industry estimates give a standard fridge. On an older unit, some owners switch the ice maker off, cap the line and buy bagged ice, which is a legitimate choice as long as the ice maker is actually turned off so the valve doesn't buzz.
Warranty is the other question. Samsung's and LG's standard refrigerator warranties run 1 year on parts and labor, and their longer coverage is for the compressor and sealed system, so an ice maker on a two-year-old refrigerator is usually an out-of-pocket repair. Why is my ice maker not making ice after I changed the filter?
A frequent culprit is a filter that isn't fully locked, which can block flow to the ice maker. Remove it and try the dispenser; if water runs, reseat the filter firmly. Air trapped in a new filter can also slow the first fills, so run a few glasses of water through the dispenser and give it a day.
