Warranty Service or a Local Repair Company: Which Call Comes First?
Two facts settle most of this: the date the appliance was delivered and its model number. The model number is on a sticker, usually inside the door, along the frame or on the back. Dig out the receipt too, because a covered repair booked with the wrong people turns free work into a bill.
Call the manufacturer first when
- The appliance is less than a year old. Samsung pays parts and labor for twelve months across its major appliance categories, GE labels its standard terms a 1-Year Limited Warranty, and Whirlpool counts its typical one-year term from delivery day.
- The failed part has longer coverage. LG pays parts and labor on a refrigerator's sealed system through year 5. Maytag's 10-year limited parts warranty covers key parts, such as a washer's drive motor, on major kitchen and laundry models built after 2017.
- You bought a retailer or extended protection plan. Read who it sends before you pay anyone else.
A local repair company makes sense when
- The first year is over and the broken part isn't on the long-coverage list. A drain pump, igniter or door switch is usually yours to pay for.
- Long coverage pays for parts while you pay for labor. LG's inverter compressor warranty covers the part alone from year 6 through year 10, and LG's own warranty text says the owner is charged for labor then. The labor quote is the number to compare.
- You want a price benchmark. Frigidaire's own repair booking quotes $150 and up for a trip and diagnosis, and $190 and up for a fixed-price repair, which gives you something to hold a local visit fee against.

What to Settle on the First Call to a Repair Company
The technician can only bring the right part if the description is right, and you can only compare prices if you know how the fee works. Five minutes on the phone covers both.
- What the visit fee buys
- HomeGuide's national figure for a standard visit is $70 to $130, which usually covers the drive, the diagnosis and an hour of labor. HomeGuide puts emergency call-out fees at $140 to $400. Get the dollar amount, and ask if it comes off the bill when you approve the repair.
- The model number and the exact code
- Read a display code character by character. Samsung washers show 5C for a drain fault while LG shows OE, and one wrong letter can send the tech looking at a different part. The decoder for common error codes covers the usual suspects.
- Brand and timing
- Say the brand up front and ask if they work on it, since not every company works on every make. Same-day visits happen when the company's calendar and parts stock allow, so ask rather than assume.
- Price in writing, plus the repair's own warranty
- Get the quote on paper before any work starts. Then ask how long the company stands behind its parts and its labor, since those two periods are often different.
- Gas lines and refrigerant
- Under Texas law, gas piping counts as plumbing, and Houston issues a gas connection permit only to a master plumber registered with the city. HomeGuide notes that sealed-system refrigerant work needs an EPA-certified technician, so ask whether the tech holds that certification. Smell gas? Leave on foot, then call CenterPoint Energy and 911 from a safe distance before booking anything.

What Houston's Heat, Storms and Tap Water Mean for Your Appliances
The second fridge in the garage
NOAA's 30-year normals (1991 to 2020) give Bush Intercontinental 111.3 days a year at or above 90°F and Hobby 100.5. Those are outdoor readings. An air-conditioned kitchen doesn't see them, so they say little about the refrigerator beside your stove.
A garage is different, because a refrigerator dumps its heat through the condenser into whatever air surrounds it. GE rates its garage-ready models for a range of 38 to 110°F. Whirlpool's recommended setting covers 55 to 110°F, and Whirlpool warns that a unit not built for it may run excessively in hot weather and stress its components. Look for an ambient range in the manual before an old kitchen fridge moves out there. When the power comes back
During Hurricane Beryl in July 2024, CenterPoint counted about 2.26 million customers without power at the peak. The FDA's numbers: roughly four hours of safe cold in a closed refrigerator, two days in a full freezer and one day in a half-full one. Perishables that sat above 40°F for four hours or longer go in the trash.
Restarts can leave a code behind. Samsung lists 83E, 85E and 86E for compressor current and voltage problems after a surge or brownout, with a 60-second power cut as the first step. Its guidance for most other fridge codes is to leave the unit plugged in and the code showing, for the technician to read.
What's in the tap water
Houston Public Works' 2025 water quality report puts the main system's total hardness between 43.5 and 229 mg/L, averaging 135.5, which works out to about 7.9 grains per gallon. About 90% of that system's water comes from the Trinity and San Jacinto rivers, with the rest pumped from the Evangeline and Chicot aquifers.
Minerals can build up as scale wherever water sits or evaporates: inlet valve screens, dishwasher spray arms, the fill tube feeding an ice maker. Samsung suggests swapping a fridge's water filter at six months. An ice maker turning out small cubes is covered on the ice maker repair page.

Repair or Replace? Lifespans and the 50 Percent Rule
Consumer Reports' rule of thumb caps an old appliance's repair at 50 percent of what a new one costs. HomeGuide draws a second line at age 10, or at any repair above half the replacement price. Picture a $400 fan motor. On a French door fridge bought three years ago, fix it. On a top-freezer from 2014, the math gets much closer.
Don't count on a rebate to tip it. As of September 2026, CenterPoint's residential efficiency page lists no rebate for household appliances such as fridges and washers, and the Texas Comptroller says the federal HOMES and HEAR rebates haven't launched in Texas.
